Counselor Education Department

Professional Development Series

Students are required to complete the Professional Development Series before they are allowed to apply for Practicum/Internship. A signature sheet, found by clicking here, needs to be completed, signed and submitted to the Counselor Education Department with the Practicum/Internship application packet.

The Professional Development series of requirements has been established by the Counselor Education Department for the benefit of Master of Arts in Community Counseling students. Each requirement is geared to enhance the student’s professional development as a student and as a professional in the field of Counseling. These requirements are as follows:

  • Campus Orientation: New students are required to attend one of the Campus Orientations offered by Student Services giving them an overview of Campus life at Argosy University, Chicago.
  • First Semester Planning: New students should make an appointment to meet with the Academic Advisor within their first month in the program. This is important for planning a program of study that leads to successful completion of the degree requirements. In addition, new students may be eligible to register for the next semester’s courses. The Academic Advisor can provide a recommended course schedule and assist in the registration process.
  • Mandated Departmental Orientation: The Counselor Education department hosts a “Meet and Greet” event for new students the first Friday of each semester. This is a mandatory orientation for students who start their program in either the 2nd session of the previous semester, or the 1st session of the current semester when the event is held. Attendance at this event is important for meeting the department chair, core faculty, staff, and other new students in the program. Students will also learn about degree requirements, policies, and expectations that are specific to Counselor Education programs.
  • APA Style Workshop: The academic writing style that is accepted at Argosy University, Chicago is the APA Publication Manual 6th edition. This workshop, put on by the Academic Learning Center, will assist the student in learning the acceptable forms of academic writing.
  • Library Instruction Workshop: Library usage including access to the electronic databases and e-books is explained at this workshop.
  • Membership in a Professional Organization: Students are required to become members in a professional organization in the Counseling field.
  • Attendance at a Professional Organization Event: Students will attend one Counseling related event.
  • Meeting with Faculty Advisor: Students must take the initiative to set up one meeting with their Faculty Advisor to discuss their plans/progress.
  • Practicum Information Meeting: Prior to the Practicum/Internship experience, students are required to attend this meeting in order to gain understanding of the Practicum/Internship annual cycle in preparation for their field experience.

A signature sheet is provided in the MACC Program guide and is available here to print.

This sheet with all signatures is required as one of the requirements for the Practicum/Internship field experience.
