GENERAL CRISIS RESPONSE GUIDELINES

Do not hesitate to call 9-911 (in offices) in matters of life and death or if you are uncertain about the severity of a situation.  Classroom phones  have a labeled button that automatically dials 9-911.

Contact the Main Reception Desk on the 13th floor by stopping in or calling 1-312-777-7601.  The person on staff will contact the building Security Staff or other appropriate contacts.  The Reception Desk is open from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please see our own Reception staff but, if our reception area is closed, you may seek emergency assistance through the office of the building from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., M-F at 1-312-819-6000.  After 5 pm contact the security desk on the 1st Floor Main Lobby, 1-312-819-6005.

The nature of an incident will determine which Argosy University, Chicago  employee will respond.  This may include the Administrative Services Manager, the IT Supervisor, an Executive Committee member (President, Vice President of Academic Affairs,  Director of Admissions, Director of Student Services, and Director of Finance and Administrative Services); others will be called upon as the situation dictates.

The Executive Committee (President, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Director of Admissions, Director of Student Services  & Director of Finance and Administrative Services), members are the only ones to have contact with the media regarding crisis incidents.  All inquiries by media should be directed to one of them.  Students should be advised not to talk with the media.

Incidents should be reported to the Director of Student Services or the Administrative Services Manager. Reports are maintained in Student Services.

Building Emergencies:

In the case of a fire or medical emergency, and in situations where physical harm is threatened, victims and/or witnesses are urged to contact authorities for immediate assistance first. Police: To summon the police or an ambulance, call 9-911 and the operator will alert the proper authorities, and then call building security at 1-312-819-6005. Building Security: To summon a security guard, check with the Receptionist or, if after hours, the Building Security Desk (large, round desk) in the main lobby, 1-312-819-6005.

Building Evacuation Procedures:

In the event you are instructed to evacuate the building, duties have been assigned to staff and faculty to assist in a smooth evacuation.  Official instructions will be given by authorized campus and other personnel.

  • Stop work immediately. Pick up your valuables but do not pack up supplies or work in progress.
  • Follow Instructions provided over the PA system and remain calm and orderly.
  • Follow directions from nearest faculty or staff member for exiting your area. Exit building using nearest stairwells only.
  • A staff or faculty member will proceed with any physically challenged individual to the nearest stairwell exit to await instruction from the Stairwell Monitor, and enter the stairwell only after being directed to do so by the Stairwell Monitor.
  • Clear the front entrance of the building by going at least two blocks north along Michigan Avenue to Pioneer Court adjacent to the Chicago Tribune Building.
  • Do not re-enter the building until emergency personnel signal it is clear to do so.

Fires:

All students, faculty and staff are urged to acquaint themselves with the location of the exits, exit stairwells, fire alarm switches, and available fire extinguishers on each floor of the university. In case of fire, call the emergency operator (9-911) immediately. Give the operator the precise location of the fire and s/he will alert the fire department.  Listen for official instructions and move to a safe area or evacuate if necessary.  If evacuating, go north along Michigan Avenue to Pioneer Court adjacent to the Chicago Tribune Building.and meet your group to report in to your instructor.  The Michigan Plaza Building has alarm systems on each level.  Respond to the alarm system in whatever area of the building you find yourself and listen carefully for instructions.  Fire drills are conducted routinely by the campus facility staff and the Chicago Fire Department.  An evacuation map and simple instruction sheet is posted in each classroom.

Building Security and/or Theft:

Contact the 13th floor Reception Desk in person or by calling 1-312-777-7601.  They will summon Security Staff or other appropriate assistance.  After hours, and if  this is an emergency, seek assistance at the Security Desk in the middle of the 1st Floor, Main Lobby, 1-312-819-6905
