Inside Argosy Chicago - September 2010

Counselor Education Department

Welcome to the academic year 2010 – 2011.  The Counselor Education Department would like to update you regarding some notable achievements we had last year, and take note of new developments in the upcoming year

Highlights From 2010-2011

Accreditation of the MACC Program

2009-2010 marked a new milestone for the MA Community Counseling program in that we attained 8 years of accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Programs (CACREP) in January this year.

The Department would like to thank our students, professors, and other university personnel, whose support was instrumental in making the accreditation process possible and successful.

The accreditation of the program signifies the quality of the program and recognition from the profession. With this accreditation, you can go through a quicker and simpler process when you apply for your licensure examination in Illinois.

Personnel Update

Departure of Steve Wright

Mr. Steve Wright, Department Administrator for the Counseling Department from 2008-2010, left Argosy and went to actualize his ambition of being a counselor. He was hired by Haymarket, where he had his practicum and internship. We wish him good luck for his new adventure in the field of counseling.

New Addition to the Faculty Team

The Department would like to welcome Ms. Maricruz Ramos, NCC, LPC, & DCC as a new faculty member joining the department. Ms. Ramos is going to attain her doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Northern Illinois University. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Ramos was the Director of Career Services at Argosy University, Chicago. Ms. Ramos has been very active in professional organizations within the field. She has held leadership positions in professional counseling organizations at local and state levels, such as being the President of the Chicago Counseling Association (CCA) from 2000 – 2001 and the Illinois Association for Multicultural Counseling (IAMC) 2007 – 2008, respectively. She was also the recipient of the Illinois Association of Multicultural Counseling Outstanding Leadership Award in 2005.

New Department Administrator/Training Coordinator, Mr. Jonathan Webb

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Jonathan Webb, who recently joined us in early August. Mr. Webb received his B.A. in Theater and Communication from the University of Stony Brook, New York. He also attained a certification in Project Management from Harper College, and is currently enrolled in the Integrated Marketing Communication Certification program at DePaul University. Prior to his appointment at Argosy, he worked for various organizations in the areas of fundraising, data management, project management, event and conference planning, and marketing/outreach.

Although he is new, he has already jumped in and helped the department with various projects.  Jonathan’s e-mail address is jpwebb@argsoy.edu, and his extension is 7730.  His office is Room 1382.

New Development in 2010 to 2011

Use of E-Texts in the Doctoral Programs

Starting from fall 2010, most of the courses in the Ed.D. Counseling Psychology Program will be using e-textbooks. In other words, textbooks will be attached with students’ e-college platform in the courses they take, and students do not need to physically purchase the textbooks. However, since the Ed.D. CES program shares some courses with the CP program, CES students will be using e-textbooks in some of their courses as well.

Introduction of Day Time Weekly Classes

In order to meet the needs of our diverse student population and the increase of full-time students in the MACC program, we will start to conduct day time weekly courses which do not have online components. This fall we are experimenting with two courses, Counseling Skills and Group Counseling, in the 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. timeframe. The department may implement more day time courses pending students’ feedback and demands for these courses.

Finally, it is the department’s intent to maintain and improve the quality of all its programs. We welcome suggestions from students and faculty. We look forward to a successful year.
