NAVIGATING THE IRB PROCESS

STEPS IN THE DISSERTATION PROCESS

A. Gain Individual Committee Approval

Education/Business/Counseling students refer to the “Student Guide to the Dissertation Process” updated April 2010

Once you have received approval from your individual committee, defended your dissertation (if applicable), and received all the required signatures, THEN, IRB certification must be secured. Below you will find an overview of the IRB proposal process and certification.

B. Gain Institutional Review Board (IRB) Certification

  • The Argosy University, Chicago Institutional Review Board does not approve research studies. The function of the IRB is to certify that the researcher or principal investigator is in compliance with guidelines for the ethical treatment of human research participants (per federal requirements and the Belmont Report).
  • The researcher or principal investigator, with his or her CRP or Dissertation Chair or Research Supervisor, must complete all information per The Compliance Review Procedure in Brief found on page viii of the IRB Handbook. The IRB Handbook, and attached checklists (each checklist varies by Category of Certification, see page 16 for categories) provide a guide to certification of any research activity. NO participants shall be contacted by the researcher prior to IRB certification.
  • IRB Handbook
  • IRB Appendices (Word Document) Please download and save the appropriate forms
  • Faculty IRB Application

Submit all application materials to Melissa Heinemann, IRB Coordinator, via her mailbox on the 13th floor; no electronic submissions will be accepted.
